Sacred Island of Okinoshima and
Associated Sites in the Munakata Region
Okinoshima in Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, has been revered as the "Sacred Island" from the late 4th century to the present. Even now, landing by the general public is restricted, and strict taboos called "forbidden place" are observed.
On Okinoshima, ritual sites have been confirmed that show transitions from rock surface rituals to rock shade rituals to rock chamber rituals, and as many as 80,000 excavated artifacts have been designated as National Treasures. The Kofun groups built from the 5th to 6th centuries indicate the presence of the Munakata clan who supported this faith. In the late 7th century, rituals also began at the sites on Oshima Island and on the Kyushu mainland, and the prototype of Munakata Taisha consisting of three shrines was established.
Faith in the three Munakata goddesses has spread throughout the country, and continues to be inherited as a living tradition even today through activities such as beach cleanups by local residents and the proposal of "Good Heritage Day."
