Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range

The Kii Mountain Range has been a center of faith as a sacred space spreading south of Japan's capital since ancient times. Three sacred sites—Yoshino-Ōmine, the Kumano Sanzan, and Kōya-san—and the pilgrimage routes connecting them are registered as World Cultural Heritage.
Yoshino-Ōmine is a sacred site of Shugendō, centered on Kinpu-sen-ji associated with En no Gyōja, known for its thousand-year tradition of mountain asceticism and 30,000 cherry trees. The Kumano Sanzan consists of three shrines: Kumano Hongū Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha, exemplifying the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism that fused megalithic faith with Buddhism. Kōya-san is the head temple of Shingon Mikkyo (Shingon Esoteric Buddhism) founded by Kūkai (774-835) in 816, and currently has 117 temples densely clustered.
The pilgrimage routes connecting these sites include Ōmine Okugake-michi connecting Yoshino and Kumano, four routes leading to Kumano, and routes to Kōya-san. As "Cultural Landscapes" where nature such as mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and forests are linked with religious significance, this is an important World Heritage site demonstrating the spirituality and view of nature of the Japanese people.
