Himeji-jo
"Himeji-jo" is Japan's first World Cultural Heritage site, alongside "Buddhist Buildings in the Horyu-ji area." It is the supreme masterpiece of Japanese castle architecture, completed in the early 17th century. It began in the 6th year of Keicho (1601) when Ikeda Terumasa (1565-1613) built a five-story, seven-level linked-style Tenshukaku (donjon), and has been protected by the people of Himeji who take pride in their castle.
Himeji-jo has two distinctive features compared to castles around the world. First, while castles worldwide are built of stone or brick, Himeji-jo is a wooden structure. The delicate composition created by white plaster and overlapping roofs combines rational function with outstanding beauty. Second, the stone walls and moats surround only the castle itself, not the entire town. This is a characteristic common throughout Japan. Himeji-jo is also a representative example of Japan's unique regional structure where castle, town, and villages are connected in a web-like pattern.
