Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu

The Kingdom of Ryukyu (officially known as "Ryukyu-koku") was an independent kingdom that flourished from the 14th to 19th centuries, centered on Okinawa Island. In 1429, Sho Hashi (1372-1439) unified the three kingdoms (Sanzan) and established the First Sho Dynasty.
In 1469, the Second Sho Dynasty was established, and during the reign of the third king, Sho Shin (reigned 1477-1527), the kingdom reached its golden age. King Sho Shin developed political and religious organizations and expanded national power through trade with Ming China, Siam, and Malacca.
The component assets include five gusuku (castles): Nakijin Castle Ruins, Zakimi Castle Ruins, Katsuren Castle Ruins, Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, and Shuri Castle Ruins; the royal mausoleum of Tamaudun; the sacred sites of Sefa-utaki and Sonohyan-utaki Stone Gate; and the royal villa of Shikinaen. These embody the spirit of the "Bridge Between Nations," where Ryukyu's unique culture merged with Chinese and Japanese influences. Even after the Satsuma invasion of 1609, the kingdom continued to nurture its distinctive culture and produced performing arts such as Kumiodori, which is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
